Three Farmers Camelina Oil
We have just introduced a new product from Saskatchewan, Camelina Oil. The oil is pressed from the seed of Camelina sativa, an ancient grain commonly used centuries ago in Northern Europe and Asia. It fell out of favour due to the ease of use of other oils, and its high content of unsaturated oil that made it difficult to use in creating margarine. The oil is rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids as well as vitamin E. The vitamin E helps give the oil a longer shelf life over another oil known its omega 3 content – flax seed oil.
Our supplier is Three Farmers, a group of, you guessed it, three farmers who started growing and marketing this oil.
Come into the store and try a taste of the oil. Our web site will give more information about the taste, use and history of this product.
Balsamic
A popular product in the Shop is Balsamic vinegar. We carry a large range of aged, flavoured and reduced balsamics, all imported from Italy. Come in and sample from our selection to help you appreciate the variation aging and flavouring makes.
True balsamic vinegar comes from Modena Italy using a process that goes back close to a thousand years. Made from the juice of trabbiano grapes, the process starts with the juice being boiled down to form a thick syrup called must. This must is then aged in a succession of wooden barrels, each wood leaving its own characteristics in the product. Ideally the aging process lasts for at least twelve years. Some of the balsamic is then removed and bottled. The rest continues to age. Balsamic at the Shop For All Reasons includes 12 year old, solera 50 and solera 100. Solera refers to the blending of balsamic by the replacing of older balsamic by the next oldest product when some is removed from the barrel. For example, the 100 year barrel could have 50 year used to top off the barrel when some is removed. Thus solera 100 would be a mix of 100 and 50 year olds. Aging thickens and sweetens the balsamic, with the sweetest referred to as a dessert balsamic. For a real treat, enjoy some sprinkled on slices of Parmesan cheese.
Twisted Pit Olive Oil
One of the favourite olive oils in the shop is from a small grove in Greece, owned by two brothers. Tim lives in Greece and cares for the estate, while Chris lives in Guelph Ontario. Listening to the passion as Chris talk about Greece, their estate and the fantastic product they make, you cannot help but start to share in his enthusiasm. They use sustainable processes to create a line of organic infused olive oils, with subtle fruit flavours mixed with herbs, some right from their estate. You can taste all of their oils at the shop – they are great for dipping as well as cooking. Recipies for Twisted Pit olive oils can be found on their web site http://twistedpit.com/recipes.html , or come into the shop where we will have recipies available.
